Happy Tuesday folks. We’re going to spend the next few weeks answering your coffee questions! Tune in each Tuesday for a new question and see if Ed and Frank at 𝐌𝐨𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧’ 𝐁𝐮𝐳𝐳 𝐂𝐨𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐞 𝐂𝐨 get stumped!!
This week Karen Coughlin-Melo asks us about caffeine and which roast has the most. You may be surprised by the answer.

When you use coffee grounds as a fertilizer directly into your soil you are adding organic material. This improves drainage, water retention and aeration in the soil. Microorganisms beneficial to plant growth will also thrive when you add coffee grounds.
Some people are concerned that coffee grounds will lower the ph level in soils. This is true only if you use fresh coffee grounds. Now, truth be told, most of us will use the coffee grounds to make an excellent cup of coffee before venturing out into the garden. So, those used coffee grounds have a near neutral ph of 6.5 and will not affect the acid level of your soil.
Happy gardening and please share pictures with us on Instagram and Facebook of your happy, coffee loving gardens. Or just pictures of you happily loving your coffee and your garden!

One of the best things to have around the yard is a compost container of sorts. Use this material in your garden throughout the year as a natural fertilizer.
Composting with coffee is a great way to make use of something that normally ends up in landfill. Composting coffee grounds helps to add nitrogen to your compost pile.
(Used filters can be composted as well)
Keep in mind that coffee grinds and filters are considered green compost material(usually a wetter material). You’ll want to add brown compost material(dry leaves, straw, wood chips) to keep everything balanced.
So, not only will Mornin’ Buzz Coffee help you get on with your day, it will help your compost pile too!

By the time of the New Republic, Edorian caf beans were grown and picked from the cliffs of the Campalan mountain range on the southeastern peninsula of the Forest Moon, Endor.
Brewed much like coffee, and mostly enjoyed that way, they were also coated with chocolate and eaten as a treat.
Well, now you know this and, we’re happy to tell you that Lieutenant Stramm of the Rebel Alliance Fleet loved to drink caf!

Posty
Posty was one of the worst cases of neglect that Ladybird had seen. In 2019, he was abandoned in a carrier henna a gas station in Hamilton. Police were called to pick him up and soon after he came into Ladybird’s care.
With extensive medical attention and lots of time to heal in a loving foster care, a sweet, adorable, and loving pup emerged and learned to trust again. The outpouring of community support for this sweet guy was humbling. When he was ready to be adopted it didn’t take long for him to find a forever home!
Look what love can do!

Stanley
Stanley was found in a backyard with staples in his face and ears. It is beyond our comprehension how anyone could do something as horrific as this to an innocent animal. It is truly disturbing.
Animal Control was called and the Animal Control officer took Stanley to the vet where the staples were removed. Thankfully, there wasn’t any permanent damage and Stanley was acting fairly normally for a critter who had been through such trauma.
Stanley was then sent to Animal Control. We picked Stanley up from the shelter and took him to our vet for a check-up. Our vet was happy to report that Stanley seemed somewhat unscathed from his ordeal, other than the obvious hole in his ear. Stanley was prescribed an antibiotic to be on the safe side, and he was placed into a foster home, that eventually became his forever home!
From horrible start to happy ending!

Marley
When he came into Hamilton Animal Control as a stray, Marley’s fur was so matted that he couldn’t move his body properly. His fur was literally dreadlocked all over his body. His teeth were rotten to the point that his tongue stuck out most of the time and he drooled. Imagin how painful a toothache is. Now times that by all your teeth, and to top it off, your gums are inflamed and infected. It broke our hearts that Marley had to endure that type of misery for so long.
But we rescued him from HAC and took him straight to the vet to get him on the road to feeling better. Marley had to wait a little while before he could have his dental surgery because of his poor body condition and an infection that showed up in his blood tests. When he finally had his surgery, all of Marley’s teeth were removed because they were in such bad shape. He recovered from his surgery really well, and his foster family helped him feel better while he healed.
Through it all, Marley was the sweetest, most snuggly purr head cat you’ve ever met. Even when he was in severe pain and discomfort, Marley was nothing but a love bug. All he wanted was to love and get love. And now he is getting all the love and more in his forever home!

This month for Coffee School 101 we're going to take tell you a few amazing stories about animals. As many of you know we've teamed up with Ladybird Animal Sanctuary to help raise funds this spring. When you enter the code LADYBIRD 20% of your purchase will go directly to this charity.
Let's take a look at the early days of Ladybird and how it all began.
A Cat Named Oliver
It all started with a cat named Oliver who had been abandoned at a
local shelter. After spending a year in a cage, and some time not
being able to shake what seemed like a cold, he was diagnosed with
feline leukaemia. In some shelters, this is a death sentence, even
though FeLV cats can live long, healthy lives, despite the diagnosis.
Oliver was snuggly, affectionate, full of life and certainly not
deserving of death just because of his diagnoses. Lisa brought him
home and spent months trying to find him a suitable home, as she
already had her share of rescue animals. It was sweet Oliver who
sparked our idea for Ladybird Animal Sanctuary.

]]>Bring about 7oz of water to a boil. Grind your favourite Mornin’ Buzz roast to medium, a texture slightly finer than sea salt.
Prep the filter into the detachable plastic cap. Use some of the boiled water to wet the filter.
Assemble the aeropress(make sure it’s dry) and add the coffee.
Fill entire chamber with water(200C), set timer for 1 minute and stir 3 times.
Add the cap with presoaked filter and set timer for 3 minutes.
Flip and press slowly.

Bring filtered water to a boil and pour into Moka Pot base.
You’ll need to grind approximately 2tbsp of your favourite Mornin’ Buzz roast to a fine grind(think table salt, if you don’t have a measured mill).
Put the ground coffee into the Moka Pot basket and settle this into the base. Be careful and use oven mitts as the pot will be hot.
Screw the top portion of the pot into place.
Set a burner to medium heat and place the Moka Pot onto this with the lid open. Make sure the handle is set off the heat.
Soon you will hear the beautiful sound of coffee brewing. Continue this until the liquid becomes a golden honey colour. At this point you can remove from heat and a)wrap a cold tea towel around the base, or b)place the pot in a bowl with cold water. This will prevent over-extraction which can lead to bitterness.
Serve as an espresso or get fancy with it!
]]>
Start by grinding your Mornin’ Buzz Coffee to a coarse grind. Think bread crumbs if you don’t have a setting for this. The ratio of coffee used can be very personal but 1tbsp to 1cup is a fair place to begin.
Bring a pot of water to boil and then let it settle for 1 or 2 minutes. Ideally, you would like a temperature around 200F.
Pour extra hot water into your French Press to warm it before use. Empty before adding the fresh ground coffee.
Once the boiled water has reached the ideal temperature you can pour the grinds into the French Press and then pour enough coffee to cover the grinds. Stir the coffee and let bloom for one minute. Gently pour the remaining water until full.
Set a timer for 5 to 6 minutes.
Plunge your French Press gently and decant into a warmed mug.
Sit back and enjoy!

For the soldier in the field, the sailor on watch, or the aircrew operating on little sleep, coffee has become not only a refresher and an alertness aid but, as with the public at large, it's evolved into a social fulcrum around which conversations turn and good times, brief but memorable, roll.
The expression "cuppa joe" has several theories, a few of them steeped in military lore. One theory is that when the then US Navy Secretary, Josephus Daniels, banned alcohol on ships in 1914, the sailors drank coffee instead and referred to it as a "cup of joe".
Another theory is that the instant coffee served was made by George Washington Refining Company and referred to it as a cup of George, later shortening it to Geo. This corrupted further to "joe".
One final belief is that it was named after US soldiers that were nicknamed GI Joes.
The Royal Canadian Legion Operational Stress Injury Special Section has launched a program to help Veterans gather to enjoy peer support, while sipping coffee. Buddy Check Coffee is a veteran run program allowing networking and the sharing of experiences and stories.
While coffee certainly didn't win wars it certainly made the lives of those in danger a little more tolerable during and after the battle.
]]>Roberta Bondar was Canada's first female astronaut. She made history during the 1992 mission aboard the space shuttle Discovery! She also holds several medical degrees including one in neuroscience. Pretty amazing.
Hayley Wickenheiser, from Saskatchewan, was a leader in women's hockey. Representing Canada she helped bring home four gold medals and one silver medal in the Olympics. Well played!
We cannot forget Viola Desmond, the black Nova Scotian business women who challenged racial segregation at a film theatre in 1946. Her image now graces the Canadian ten dollar banknote. Perseverance!
Buffy Sainte Marie is an award winning Cree singer/songwriter, artist, educator and activist! She has one Junos, Gemeni awards, the Polaris music prize, Academy awards along with so many other honours! A proud and prolific Canadian legend!
Take the time to remember all the women in your life who make the world a better place!

While coffee beans may last for up to 6-12 months after roasting, it is generally acknowledged that for maximum flavour and aroma you should use whole coffee beans within 4-6 weeks of roasting.
So 4 – 6 weeks post-roasting date is the great-taste period. But if you have purchased a large bag of coffee beans and it takes longer to use them, be assured they don’t expire and go bad.
You will, however, start to notice a change in the depth of flavour and a lessening of the coffee aroma. The oils that carry much of the flavour dry out and the quality is affected. The older the coffee beans are, the less flavour they will have.
Our best tip for enjoying fresh whole bean coffee is to buy and grind and consume small coffee quantities regularly.

Canadians have grown coffee trees but we do not have any major coffee growing industries! That said, our consumption is in the top 5 worldwide!
